Celsa Huta Ostrowiec: BCC co-creates new SAP standards for metallurgy

BCC supports the spanish Celsa Group, one of the largest steel producers in Europe, in creating their SAP corporate standard SAP for forges. An innovative element of the project is a large development of SAP standard system, which will facilitate users' work in the production department.

The project, carried out at Huta Ostrowiec, owned by Celsa, consists in comprehensive supplementation of functionalities of Celsa’s SAP corporate solution with the characteristics of forge operations. The new standard will help improve the operations of the forge in Ostrowiec by supporting its complex production processes.

Celsa Group, which has a few rolling mills in Spain and the United Kingdom, is developing dynamically and investing into acquisition of plants in further European countries. The plant in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski is composed of a rolling mill and a forge, among other units. As the forge in Ostrowiec is the only plant of this type in the group, Celsa has not yet developed SAP corporate solutions in the area of forge operations.

This kind of operations are characterized by a much wider range of products (a few thousand) than a rolling mill, more complex products, a long technological process (even a few months), and order-based production. Moreover, the forge must often cater for specific clients’ requirements even in the case of products that are considered standard ones as well as high requirements in terms of production quality control. Such conditions result in the necessity of implementing other advanced SAP functionalities in production and quality management.

The innovative part of the BCC-supported project is preparing a completely new solution, which goes far beyond the SAP standard. The solution will simplify and facilitate users’ work in the production department. All the operations carried out by the users will be done on one screen. The development will be created in ABAP technology.

‘In this project, innovative on the scale of the whole Celsa Group, we needed an implementation partner that would ensure expert-level knowledge on the possibilities of using SAP in managing complex production processes. An additional argument in favor of BCC was its experience in SAP projects in metallurgy’, said Miguel Marroyo, responsible for coordinating SAP projects in Celsa group.

The productive start of SAP system in the forge in Ostrowiec is scheduled for February 2007.
