Data which enters a new system is usually inherited from the IT solution which is being replaced. No matter if the data is in the form of a spreadsheet or a database – the information about our customers, suppliers, materials, invoices or bookings must be transferred into a new system if it is going to be used in business.
The activities which determine a successful data transfer are called data migration or sometimes data conversion.
In order to organize the process of data provision in a new system, the sub-projects of data migration are set up in the main implementation project. These sub-projects are also called conversion projects. They require the determination of data scope which is to be transferred as well as the determination of source and target systems. In the project itself, the data is being extracted from the source systems, cleaned, processed and loaded into the target system.
