How to migrate to S/4HANA?

Greenfield, Brownfield, or maybe BLUEFIELD?

Share
The selection of the strategy of migration to S/4HANA depends on many factors. How complex is the landscape of our systems, do we want to simplify it and how? We migrate from one SAP ERP system to one S/4 system, or maybe we switch from several different SAP systems used in the group to one central system? Do we treat migration as a mainly technological transformation, which entails, above all, changing a database to HANA? Are we going to make other changes at the same time, which will have a strong impact on business – a new general ledger, a new chart of accounts? Consolidation of business entities? To what extent do we want to make use of new functions and modules not used before and now available in S/4HANA? What scope of access to historical data from the old SAP ERP system do we want to have in the new system? These and other questions make it more difficult to choose an optimal path of migration to S/4HANA than to select a route in a car navigation system.

The terms Greenfield and Brownfield are used in a variety of industries, meaning two main alternatives: a project carried out “from scratch” and a project using existing resources. In the context of S/4HANA migration, there is still a third, innovative approach developed by SNP: BLUEFIELD™.

Just like with an old house, in many cases it is better to demolish it and to design and build a completely new one instead of carrying out a complete renovation.

The new system is configured using the best SAP practices, taking into account the existing processes in the old SAP system (manually copied and customized configuration from the SAP ERP system). In addition, new settings for new processes/modules in S/4HANA are configured in it. In the case of greenfield, it is possible to partially migrate data ...
